Named the 1990 Small Press Publisher of the Year award from Quality Books, Inc., Bookhaus is the recipient of six other book publishing awards, including two Benjamin Franklin Awards from Publishers Marketing Association.

The company, based in Aurora, Illinois, was founded by Veltisezar "Velty" B. Bautista, a former journalist and the author of five books who came here in 1976 to pursue his American Dream.
